Stress Testing
The Adult and Pediatric Stress Testing Lab (ETT) is one of five service groups of the Cardiac Diagnostic Unit at Duke University Medical Center, which provides service to more than 25,000 patients each year.
Tests offered in the lab include include:
-
Exercise Treadmill
-
Stress Echocardiogram
-
Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram
-
Cardiopulmonary Stress Test
A stress test uses exercise or medication to increase heart rate and blood flow, which increases the amount of blood and oxygen the heart needs to function.
During a cardiopulmonary stress test, the patient exercises on either a bicycle or treadmill while a mouthpiece is used to precisely measure oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production. These measurements provide extra information about how the heart is working.
