Echocardiography

A leader in the field of echocardiography for more than three decades, the Duke echocardiography laboratory provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic service. Lab faculty, in conjunction with the Pratt School of Engineering, are responsible for critical advances in the field, including the invention and development of two-dimensional and three-dimensional technologies.

The laboratory is ICAEL-accredited and performs approximately 30,000 studies per year.

Imaging procedures available:

  • Echocardiography
  • Stress echocardiography
  • Pharmacologic stress echocardiography
  • Transesophageal echocardiography
  • Contrast echocardiography
  • Intracardiac, intraoperative, and intravascular ultrasound

The laboratory is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. After-hours and on weekends, a faculty member, clinical fellow, and sonographer are on call to provide emergency services.

The main laboratory is located within the Cardiac Diagnostic Unit in Clinic 2K of the Duke Clinic complex (Duke South) with an inpatient facility at Duke University Hospital (Duke North). There are two additional sites located in the community of Durham at the Duke Health Center at North Duke Street and Southpoint Clinic on Herndon Road.

In addition to clinical care, the lab is dedicated to basic and advanced training of clinical cardiology fellows, as well as to performing clinical research in an effort to better understand the role of echocardiography in cardiac disease.

The lab has been actively involved in clinical trials and research projects with a focus on myocardial perfusion imaging, 3D imaging, tissue Doppler, and speckle tracking in effort to improve diagnostic and prognostic methodology. For more information, please visit our lab research page.
