Computed Tomography
Duke Cardiovascular Medicine
offers 64-slice cardiac CT scans in Duke
University Hospital
and Duke Clinic (Duke South).
A growing body of evidence
supports 64-slice CT as the standard of care for noninvasive coronary
angiography. The most recent studies are proving these scanners capable of
performing a diagnostic exam in more than 90 percent of patients.
The procedure also confers the
ability to rule out myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolus, and aortic
dissection with one scan.
During the painless, non-invasive
procedure, an x-ray beam creates 3-D images of the coronary arteries and
cardiac chambers.
Alternatively, patients may receive
a coronary calcification score of high, average, or low, as compared to other
people of their age and gender. Combined with other diagnostic techniques, this
score can help predict likelihood of future heart problems.
There are limitations; most
patients still require the use of beta-blockers to slow heart rate, and
patients with arrhythmias remain ineligible.
