Endocarditis

Endocarditis is associated with a high proportion of adverse outcomes, but little high-quality evidence exists to gauge who is at risk, to aid in prevention, or to guide therapeutic decision-making when patients develop infectious endocarditis (IE).

At Duke, we have a substantial history of endocarditis research and a dedicated research team devoted to improving endocarditis patient care and research. The local research efforts focus on the Duke Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study, the longest running prospective cohort study of its type in the United States.

We also serve as the Coordinating Center for the International Collaboration on Endocarditis (ICE). ICE resources include:

  • The largest combined (retrospective) database of patients with endocarditis
  • The first international multicenter prospective cohort study in infectious endocarditis (IE)

In addition, we have established collaborations with leading scientists to examine potential pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with complications in IE.
